Atira Hosts Inaugural Authentic Courage Gala to Support 2STGD Housing Initiatives

Vancouver, BC – October 21, 2024 – Atira Women’s Resource Society is proud to announce its inaugural Authentic Courage Gala, a fundraising event dedicated to supporting housing initiatives for Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender-Diverse (2STGD) individuals. The gala will take place on November 23, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm at the Pan Pacific Vancouver and promises an evening filled with entertainment, exquisite food, and a silent auction.

The Authentic Courage Gala aims to raise essential funds for Atira’s Aoki Ross House and other vital programs that assist the 2STGD community, who often encounter discrimination, violence, and unsafe living conditions. Research underscores the urgent need for safe and supportive housing for this group, with numerous studies highlighting the challenges they face in accessing secure living spaces.

In response to these challenges, Atira, in partnership with the City of Vancouver and BC Housing, has been operating Aoki Ross House since 2021. This house is Western Canada’s first housing program specifically for 2STGD individuals and has successfully provided safety and stability to approximately 50 individuals. Currently, there are over 100 applications for its 23 rooms.

In addition to housing, many research studies and statistics showcase that 2STGD individuals face significant barriers in accessing medical transition procedures and essential gender-affirming support. The Authentic Courage Gala aims to raise awareness and funds to directly address these needs.  “Atira is committed to making a difference, and this dedication guides our work at Aoki Ross House. We need more spaces and increased access to healthcare for trans and gender-diverse individuals,” said Atira’s CEO, Donnie Rosa (she/they)

The event will be hosted by Caryl Dolinko, a renowned emcee celebrated for her vibrant presence at Vancouver’s Pride Parade and other significant events. The stage will also feature Jaylene Tyme, a beloved drag icon and passionate advocate for the 2STGD community. As a Two-Spirit, sober Indigenous trans woman and Sixties Scoop survivor, Jaylene embodies the resilience and inspiration at the heart of the gala’s mission. The rest of the evening will feature DJs performing lively music to create an exciting ambiance. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on hundreds of items available in the silent auction, featuring unique treasures—all while supporting a worthy cause.

Jodi Gray, Program Manager of Aoki Ross House, has personally faced housing challenges during her transition and has been managing the program since its inception. As a TEDx speaker and winner of the 2023 Courage to Come Back Award, she emphasizes, “Atira recognizes the unique challenges faced by the 2STGD community, particularly regarding access to safe and secure housing. We invite everyone to join us on November 23 to celebrate Authentic Courage. Trans, gender-diverse, and Two-Spirit individuals show courage every day by being true to themselves. We ask you to demonstrate your Authentic Courage by supporting this underserved community.”
