The Power and Control Wheel is a useful tool to illustrate the range and types of abuse that women are subject to in abusive relationships. The cumulative effect of using many abusive strategies is that abusive partners weaken their partners's ability to protect themselves and gain and maintain power and control over their partners. It is interesting to note the similarity between women's experience of abuse and Amnesty International's description of brainwashing tactics.
