According to The Smart Guide: Motivational Approaches Within the Stages of Change for Pregnant Women Who Use Alcohol (2002), the approach you take is one of the strongest indicators of whether a woman will change. It is just as important as the woman's personal characteristics and behaviour.

Recent provincial health strategy documents support the implementation of two approaches that have emerged out of the experiences of patients, and established themselves as evidence-based best practice: women-centred care and harm reduction.
