Atira's Living Libary will be opening on February 13th!
Posted Date: February 1, 2010
Atira Women’s Resource Society has established a Living Library, a resource which allows users to borrow books with one distinction: the ‘books’ are humans.
What is a Living Library?
Originating in Denmark, Living Libraries are a relatively new phenomenon to Vancouver. They allow people from all walks of life to meet and talk candidly with people from a particular background, lifestyle or experience.
What’s the purpose of the library?
The Living Library allows ‘readers’ and ‘books’ an opportunity to engage in face-to-face dialogue to openly discuss prejudices and stereotypes and to tell their stories. Visitors to the Living Library can select a 'book' for a 30-minute or more conversation, accompanied by a moderator, for a respectful and informative session about what it’s like to actually live in a neighbourhood that is otherwise characterized and defined by outside commentary and observations. Being homeless or experiencing discrimination because of a mental illness or physical disability or addiction are only a few of the stories that DTES residents have to share. They are taking part in the Living Library to show the world the rich and vibrant community that exists behind the one often portrayed in the media.
The Living Library is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from February 13 to 28, 2010 at 33/35 East Hastings Street in Vancouver.

Atira unveiled the media launch (October 16th) of a photo exhibition highlighting twelve residents living in SRAs in the Downtown Eastside. The project, a collaboration with B.C. Housing, was started more than a year ago to portray a side of the DTES not often seen or heard in the media; one of hope and vibrancy. In his images, photographer Michael Bednar wanted others to see what he was able to see while interacting with each person; a deep sense of community. The exhibit is open to the public and will be on display until October 29th at:
Pacific Centre Rotunda
(Corner of Georgia and Howe Street)
Open during mall hours
The full photo exhibit will then be available from October 30th - November 14th at the:
Interurban Gallery
1 Hastings Street
Wednesday - Sunday
1:00PM - 5:00PM
Admission is free

41 East Hastings

We are pleased to announce that Atira has leased the site at 41 East Hastings from Hastings Street Investments. We are currently seeking funding for renovations, and will partner with www.bladerunners.info youth to do the work for their housing. The site has been vacant for more than 30 years, so we’re excited it will finally be able to provide some much needed supportive housing for youth.
